Blackbutt – A Strong and Durable Hardwood
Blackbutt is a commonly available Australian hardwood that grows along the coast of New South Wales and Queensland. Its name is derived from the darkened appearance of the butt after a bush fire. It is a selectively forested Eucalypt that makes a very good plantation timber because of its quick growth rate.
Blackbutt is used for many external applications that include decking, framework, fencing, landscaping and retaining walls as well as internally for flooring. It is also used to manufacture plywood.
Blackbutt is a light coloured timber ranging from a pale honey colour to pale brown with a faint pink tinge. It is an appealing hardwood timber with a medium, even texture and a straight grain; its colour is fairly consistent. Blackbutt readily accepts staining and polishing and is one of the hardwood timbers that meet the required parameters for fire resistance without having to undergo fire-retardant treatment.
Blackbutt timber is quite a strong and durable hardwood timber that is well suited to the construction of external decking applications. With a Janka rating of 9.1 for its hardness and a durability rating of Class 1, it makes it very resistant to decay and insect infestation and it has a long life expectancy of over 40 years, provided it is well cared for and maintained.
Blackbutt decking is available in several sizes, 86x19mm, 136x19mm and 136x32mm. The decking packs usually come in random lengths ranging from 0.9m through to approximately 5.0m lengths.
